Asian ginseng

Panax ginseng
Moderate

A slow-growing Korean and Chinese root, central to East Asian medicine for two thousand years. The most-studied of the true ginsengs, with modest evidence for energy, cognition, and immune support. Different in character from American ginseng — more warming and stimulating.

  • Adaptogen — helps the body cope with physical and mental stress
  • May modestly improve mental performance, especially under fatigue
  • Supports immune function, particularly during cold and flu season
  • May modestly improve erectile function and sexual performance in men
  • Some evidence for steadier blood sugar in type 2 diabetes
  • Generally taken in cycles — several weeks on, then a break — rather than continuously
Can cause overstimulation, insomnia, or anxiety — especially at higher doses
Use caution with blood thinners — ginseng has mild anticoagulant action
Use caution with stimulants and caffeine — additive effects
May lower blood sugar — caution with diabetes medication
Use caution with hormone-sensitive conditions — ginseng has weak estrogen-like activity
Skip with uncontrolled high blood pressure
Skip during pregnancy
Stop two weeks before surgery
