Hops

Humulus lupulus

also known as hop strobile

Moderate (sleep + menopause)
Hops — Köhler 1887 botanical illustration

The flower of the climbing vine that gives beer its bitter edge. Beyond brewing, hops have a long traditional use for sleep and nervous tension, and a more recent role as one of the strongest plant sources of estrogen-like compounds — relevant for menopause but a real concern with hormone-sensitive conditions.

  • Supports sleep, especially when paired with valerian — the combination is well-studied
  • Eases mild anxiety and nervous tension
  • May ease menopausal symptoms, particularly hot flashes — through one of the most potent plant estrogens identified
  • Mild bitter digestive support — the same compounds that flavor beer also stimulate digestion
  • Antimicrobial action from the resins
Significant estrogen-like activity — skip with hormone-sensitive cancers (breast, ovarian, uterine), endometriosis, and uterine fibroids
Sedating effect — do not combine with alcohol, sedatives, or sleep medications
May worsen depression in some people due to its sedative profile
Can disrupt menstrual cycles and contribute to gynecomastia in men with prolonged high-dose use
Skip during pregnancy and nursing
Stop two weeks before surgery
